Apgar
Score
The numerical result of a newborn assessment generally done at 1
minute and again at 5 minutes after birth; assesses heart rate,
breathing, color, tone, and reflexes. A maximum of two points for
each sign s give. A ten, the highest score, indicates an infant in
optimum condition; lower scores (commonly seen in preterm infants)
indicate less responsiveness. Apgar scoring may be continued every 5
minutes for up to 20 minutes or until two successive scores are eight
or more.
